Rieger Trail

📍 Location and Charm

The Rieger Trail follows the valley of the Jizera River between the Semily district of Bítouchov and the village of Spálov (near Semily, in the Liberec Region).
The route passes through the Jizera Valley Nature Reserve, offering beautiful scenery, rock formations, the river, and historical technical monuments.

🏰 History and Name

The trail is named after František Ladislav Rieger, a famous Czech politician and native of Semily.
The original trail was opened in 1909.
Along the way, you'll find historical technical structures (see below) and information panels about the landscape and geology.

🌄 Highlights Worth Seeing

  • Suspended Gallery (Walkway): The start of the trail leads along a 77-meter-long hanging gallery built 5–6 meters above the Jizera River — a true architectural gem.

  • Rock Tunnels and Hydroelectric Plant: The path continues past rock tunnels and technical features, including the Spálov Hydroelectric Power Plant, connected by a 1.3 km tunnel through the rock.

  • Lookouts: For example, Böhm's Viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Jizera Valley.

  • Educational Panels: Along the trail, you'll find information boards (in Czech and English) about nature, geology, and technical monuments.

🚶‍♀️ Visitor Information

  • Trail length: approx. 3.5 km (sometimes listed up to 5 km) through the valley from Bítouchov to Spálov

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate — mostly an easy walk, but some rocky paths, stairs, and small climbs. Not suitable for strollers or bicycles on the full route.

  • Starting point: Recommended start in Bítouchov (Semily) — parking available.

  • Return: You can either walk back the same way or finish in Spálov and take a train or alternate upper trail (e.g. Kamenický Trail) back.

💡 Why Recommend It to Jinolice Camp Guests

This trip is relatively close to the camp — a great option for guests looking for something active but not too demanding.
It offers a mix of nature (river, rocks, forest) and technical & historical features (walkway, tunnels, hydro plant), making it ideal for families, couples, or active travelers.
Perfect for a day trip in the season — guests can set off in the morning, take water and good shoes for forest terrain, and return for lunch at the restaurant or camp.
